EASY WAYS TO GET CLIENTS TO YOUR BUSINESS

Method #3: Using the Gatekeeper

How many times have you read about what a pain it is to get past the gatekeeper? Those people were
hired to keep you from getting to the business owner.

Think about if you call all of your local dentists to solicit your business. Dentists are great prospects.
They always want more clients and they have the money to spend on your services. But who answers
the phone when you call? Who greets you at the door when you enter? Who opens your mail that you
send?

Does the business owner? Nope. The gatekeeper. And your letter will get thrown away. And your
message that you leave will never be delivered to the dentist (the business owner).

So you need to just target businesses that don’t have gatekeepers then, right? Wrong! I love the
gatekeepers! They help me get business without me having to hardly exert any effort at all.

Here’s what you do. Let’s say you go out to eat one night. You are sitting at the table enjoying your
meal. You look around and see that it’s not very crowded. I bet this restaurant could benefit from an
increased online exposure! So you look around for the business owner. Maybe he’s there…maybe he’s
not. How would you know anyway?

But guess who does know the business owner. Your waiter! So at the end of your meal, tell your server
a little bit about yourself. Trust me, they will be interested. More business for the restaurant means
more tips for them. Tell them how you can help and then slide them your business card. Let your server
know that if they pass your information along to the business owner and recommend your services, you
will gladly pay them 25% commission for the referral.

Encourage them to check out your website or ask you more questions first. But trust me, they will be
interested. And they will pass your information along. Now all you have to do is wait for the phone to
ring.

The same thing works for other businesses with gatekeepers. Take a few minutes to tell the receptionist
at the dentist’s office about what you can do. Tell her you pay commission for referrals.

That’s all it takes. And in my experience, I’d get a call about half the time from doing this.

Method #4: Press Releases

Here’s another solid way of getting business owners to pick up the phone and call you. Now, I know
some of you aren’t good writers. But that’s ok. If you truly have a passion for internet marketing, then I
know you can write a good press release.

It’s pretty simple. Write a press release, submit it online for free. (Just Google “free press release
distribution”). And then, more importantly, submit it to all of the media outlets in your area. Send it to
all of the newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations. All of their contact info can be found online.

The only thing to keep in mind here is that your press release MUST be newsworthy. This is different
from a newspaper column. A newspaper article can have opinions, give advice, etc. But your press
release MUST be relevant to the current time and location.

So what is newsworthy? You! One of my first press releases was titled, “23 Year Old Entrepreneur
Boosts Local Economy.” That’s pretty straight-forward and people will want to read it.

This method will just take a little bit of your time. But, remember, it will get new prospects calling you.
And the ultimate goal is to get your business 100% referral based like mine. Take these steps in the

Easy Ways to Get Clients Without Ever Having to make Cold Call

Method #1: Craigslist

Let’s start with an easy one. You will need to initiate contact with some prospects. But, think about
how much easier it is to close the deal when the prospect is actively searching for you. Now, instead of
selling your services and yourself, all you have to do is sell yourself. There are 2 sections on Craigslist where business owners will post ads looking for someone just like you. Under, “Jobs” there is a section called Web / Info Design and under “Gigs” there is a section called Computer. (See Image to the Left) Business owners will post ads looking for web design and internet marketing services in both of these areas. All you need to do is send them a quick email and wait for their response.

In the beginning, I used to spend 1-2 hours a day on this every day. Yes, it’s boring. But it’s an effective starting place to get your feet wet and you get to do it all through email. I don’t do this method anymore, but it’s a GREAT way to get your first few clients. Now, when you send an email to one of these business owners on Craigslist, keep in mind that they will get about 100 of these email responses within just a few hours. So,you need your email to stand out from the rest. How do youdo that? Don’t send canned responses like most people do. Actually read their ad. Write back and customize your response to their needs.

If they give you their business information or web address, check it out and write back with an analysis. But, keep your response short and sweet. Nobody will read your long email when they have 100 emails to sort through. Just send a quick intro about yourself. Tell them what you can do for them. Send a link to some references/portfolio if you have one and then tell them how to get in contact with you.
I give everyone my cell phone number and business email, both of which I monitor 24/7. When they
respond to you, you will want to respond right back within minutes. Your quick response will give you a
lot of bonus points.
Here is an example. But, modify it to make it your own:
“Dear Mr. Business Owner,
My name is _____________. I am writing in response to your Craigslist posting, “Insert Title Here.” I
help business owners just like you increase their website rankings in the major search engines.
I took a look at your website and you are off to a great start. I have a few suggestions on how to quickly
improve the SEO ranking of your site.
Here is a link to some testimonials and examples of my previous work www.YourWebsite.com
Feel free to email me or give me a call any time on my cell at xxx-xxx-xxxx. I look forward to hearing
from you.
Sincerely,
Your Name
Your Phone Number
Your Website URL”
That is just a quick response. I had several people choose me because they liked how my response was
short and sweet. It shows that you are professional and not desperate for their business (even if you
are).

Method #2: Newspaper


This method has nothing to do with placing advertisements in your local paper. That method can get
you some clients, but from my research, newspaper ads are very expensive.
This method shows you how to get publicity in the local paper that is not only more credible than an
advertisement, but it also costs you nothing!
Your local newspaper is desperate for content. I’m sure of it. All newspapers are desperate for quality,
original content. This is how I became a local celebrity.
I wrote 10 articles about internet marketing. You could probably get away with buying PLR content, but
I wouldn’t recommend it. I would recommend using your own noggin for this one. I wrote 10 articles
that were advice columns on using the internet to market yourself or your business. I didn’t hold back. I
really gave out some valuable information.
I talked about using Twitter, how to make conversions on your website, things to avoid doing, building
an email list, etc. I then submitted these 10 articles to my local paper with a short note. I told them
what I do and that I could provide an article like these examples each week to the paper free of charge
in exchange for them putting my email address at the end of the article.
To my delight, they agreed. Now, it took about 2 months before the first one got published. They
agreed and then I didn’t hear from them for a while. So I did a follow-up call. They said they were still
interested and would call me back to set up a meeting. They never called. So I followed-up again.
About 5 follow-up calls later, I was finally published. So if your first response is rejection or no response
at all, just be persistent. These guys are busy. And it has certainly paid off. This method here has
definitely provided the majority of my local clients. I go to the store now and get recognized. I’m
literally a local celebrity because of these articles that take me 20 minutes a week to write.
Being a writer in the paper establishes HUGE credibility. And do business owners read the paper?
Absolutely. And if not – their friends do. Trust me – spend some time writing some articles for free and
it will pay off in a great way.
